A Meditation Space

During the last year I have been studying the importance of the cardinal points in the belief systems of various cultures, both ancient and modern. I have undertaken to develop and build a space that will embody my personal interpretation of this universal theme. The space is for meditation, both visual and aural. There will be four life-size images hanging in space symbolizing earth, fire, water, and metal.

In Chinese Cosmology, there are four cardinal points: Shui represents north, the element water, and knowledge; Jin represents west, the element metal, and morality; Hue represents south, the element fire, and creativity; and Tu represents east, the element earth, and nourishing. The orientation of the space will have the four images placed in the direction of their corresponding cardinal point.

The viewer will be able to see one or more images at a time while peripherally sensing the others. The space may be entered from the four corners. The view from outside the space will be filled with light reflected off the white outer walls, obscuring the mystery that lies within.
